Most new appliances are guaranteed for one year. If you experience a problem within one year of purchase, call the manufacturer for free warranty service.
Some parts, like refrigerator compressors, are warrantied for 5-10 years. These parts fail very rarely -- more often you'll be looking at a main board / start relay failure which will cause the compressor to stop running.
Occasionally, appliance problems are covered under recalls. You can usually check whether your appliance is involved in a recall using the serial number, which will be located on your appliance.
It's important to know the expected lifespan of your appliance. Refrigerators typically last about 15 years; ranges, 16; dryers & washers (top load), 14; front loading washers, 12; dishwashers, 12; and microwaves, 10. If your appliance is approaching the end of its life, you may consider purchasing a new one. Add a couple of years for luxury appliances to offset cost.
